Track the animal history

Use a stable identifier where practical. Keep acquisition, purchase cost, use, offspring, sale, and other disposition notes linked to the supporting records.

Track the cost history separately

Preserve prior-year worksheets and any accepted treatment of costs. A quantity in your collection does not tell you whether a cost was already used in an earlier calculation.

Flag decisions for review

Breeding use, resale, changes in purpose, barter, and earlier deductions can require additional review. Keep those questions visible for your tax preparer; do not assign a treatment from the animal’s label alone.
