Capture more than a total

For each purchase, save the receipt, date, amount, seller, and a short note about its purpose. If a receipt combines personal and business items, identify the items separately for review.

Keep equipment history

Create a record for major equipment that includes purchase information, when it began being used, any changes in use, and its eventual sale or disposal. Preserve prior-year treatment rather than starting the history again each year.

Use categories to organize, not decide

A label such as feeders, shipping, or equipment helps you find records. It does not by itself establish a deduction. Bring the facts and supporting records to the preparer who reviews the treatment.
